Vertical labret jewellery for the piercing that runs vertically through the bottom lip, with one end sitting on top of the lip and the other just below it. Unlike a standard labret, a vertical labret never touches the teeth or gums, and it takes a curved barbell rather than a flat back stud.
Vertical labret bars
A vertical labret piercing takes a curved barbell of 8mm to 10mm, with both ends on show. Ball ends are the standard fit; gem, opal and disc ends dress the piercing up. Matching ends look cleanest, though a gem on top and a plain ball underneath is a popular combination. Fresh piercings are fitted at 10mm or longer and downsize once the lip has settled.
Jestrum piercing jewellery
A jestrum is the same piercing through the top lip, running from the philtrum down to the underside of the lip. It takes the same curved barbells, usually 8mm to 10mm.
Sizing and materials
Vertical labret and jestrum piercings are 1.2mm (16g) as standard, with some piercers using 1.6mm (14g). Jewellery is implant grade ASTM F-136 titanium or solid 14k gold.
