Flat back earrings have a flat disc instead of a butterfly, so the back sits flush against the ear. Nothing pokes into your neck when you sleep, nothing snags in hair, and they are the standard for cartilage piercings and ear stacks.
Flat back stud earrings
Each flat back stud is a labret bar with a decorative top. Threaded tops screw into the bar; threadless tops push in and hold with a slight bend in the pin. Tops run from plain balls and discs to gems, opals, clusters and shapes, and because the bar is sold separately you can swap tops without buying a new post each time.
Titanium, gold and silver flat backs
Titanium flat back earrings in implant grade ASTM F-136 are nickel free and the right choice for healing piercings. Gold flat back earrings come in solid 14k gold for a warmer finish that will not fade. Sterling silver tops are for healed lobes only.
Sizing
Most flat back earrings are 1.2mm (16g). Bar length is measured from the disc to the base of the top: 6mm suits healed helix, tragus and lobe piercings, 8mm suits fresh piercings and thicker conch placements, and 10mm or more suits lips. Flat back nose studs are 0.8mm (20g) or 1mm (18g) at 6mm.
