Orbital piercing jewellery: rings that pass through two piercings in one go, so the hoop looks like it orbits the ear. Orbitals are most often worn on the helix or the lobe, and the jewellery is always a ring, never a bar.
Orbital rings
Hinged segment rings are the easiest to fit through two holes, because the hinged section opens wide and closes flush. Seamless rings and ball closure rings also work once you are used to them. Diameter depends on the distance between the two piercings, usually 8mm to 10mm on the helix and 10mm to 12mm on the lobe.
Choosing the right size
Measure the gap between the two holes, then add roughly 2mm so the ring has room to sit without pulling. If you are between sizes, go larger; a tight orbital ring puts pressure on both piercings.
Sizing and materials
Orbitals are pierced at 1.2mm (16g) almost without exception, and because one ring carries two piercings the gauge has to suit both holes; if one was pierced thicker, size the ring to the larger. Orbital piercing jewellery is all rings: hinged segment rings and seamless rings in implant grade ASTM F-136 titanium, polished or PVD coated, some with an opal or gemstone set into the hinge, and solid gold hoops for a special one. A heavier ring pulls on both holes, so for an orbital on the lobe choose titanium over gold until it has healed.
